John T Powell Sr, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather went to be
with the Lord Saturday, December 31. He was 87 years young.
“John T“ was born August 3, 1935 to the late James and Marguerite Green Powell. He
graduated from Decatur High School in 1953 and joined the Army in 1955, where he
served in the Military Intelligence.
He married the love of his life Joy Diane Parker December 12, 1959 and would call her
his wife for the next 63 years. John and Joy had four children, Johnny, Joe, Janice, and
Joyce; collectively known as the “J” family.
John T was a truck driver for A&P food stores for 40 years, retiring in 1999. He was the
last true “do it yourselfer”. He would tackle any project, from working on boats, cars, or
campers, to building a deck to roofing a house. He was a true craftsman and a “jack of
all trades”. He would never hesitate to lend a hand to help out friends or family. He had
an affinity for animals; especially dogs, whom always reciprocated in kind.
He was a devoted family man who enjoyed camping, water skiing, fishing, hunting, and
backpacking. Though he was an avid outdoorsman, his true passion was the time
spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He never met a person
he didn’t like and was loved by all that knew him. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 7 at 2:30 PM at Cleveland
Funeral Home/Alexander Chapel US 129. Visitation will begin at 1:30 PM and reception
to follow. In lieu of flowers the family request donation to be sent to Appalachian
